European Union Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US on five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.
