Larian Studios Announce a New Divinity, Calling it Their Most Ambitious RPG Yet

The speculation around the recent awards show has been intense, particularly after host Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling image of a strange statue. The question has now been solved. The acclaimed developer is developing a brand-new Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was debuted with a bold trailer packed with intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the very unleashing of hell.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian clarified that a follow-up to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not being worked on now.

However, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This choice of words hints that the team might be designing a real-time experience instead of another tactical title. At this moment, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is widely praised and it's fair to claim it sparked the modern wave of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are defined by intricate stories, choice-driven narratives, and deep class systems—qualities that subsequently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is classic fantasy, what makes Divinity apart is the immense freedom bestowed upon the player.

Where many modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is packed with unique possibilities that are viable if you're playing as a distinct build with a specific history of choices.

The series is also wonderfully open-ended, letting players to improvise throughout the entire experience. Nearly every quest can be approached in a variety of manners, sometimes in surprising fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you recalled something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by moving environmental hazards in a unorthodox way.

More to Come

It is these creative systems that have cemented the series to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games in history. Now, players can look forward to a new entry in this esteemed franchise.
