The Former President's System of Consequences and Incentives

The ex-president's insatiable appetite for revenge has quickly morphed into a methodical apparatus. During the past year, the leader's rage and whims have adopted the guise of administrative measures in ways reminiscent to earlier dictatorial systems. Justice department officials who resist his demands are summarily dismissed and substituted by supporters. Political leaders who challenge him encounter prosecution, trial and penalties. Adversaries have been categorized under executive orders as “anti-American”, “anti-Christian” and “opposing economic freedom”, and warned with criminal charges as “security threats”.

Government Institutions Remade

All instance involving targeting of critics and leniency for supporters demonstrates its own unique features. However, regardless of their individual form, they exemplify expressions of what has arisen as a calculated approach. These events are not coincidental. The administration's purge of Department of Justice lawyers and FBI officials, accompanied by his installation of supporters in key roles, started swiftly, soon took on a pattern, and has now been formed into a structure. The justice department and the law enforcement agency have been transformed into political bodies under his explicit orders to execute his directives. Wrongdoing has been rendered routine. It constitutes the system of punishment.

Management is preoccupied with targeting the leader's supposed adversaries than they are with defending our public welfare.

Internal the Apparatus

The origin of this framework has been revealed in the legal complaint of multiple former top Federal Bureau agents filed in late summer in the federal court in the capital against agency head Kash Patel and justice department head another official for wrongful dismissal in “a initiative of revenge against Plaintiffs for what the accused deemed to be a refusal to show proper political loyalty”. In the complaint that one official, the ex- interim leader, details a discussion in which Patel “publicly acknowledged the impropriety of his behavior”.

The official had tried to shield FBI agents from being fired, the filing alleges. Patel told him that “they” – perceived by the official to be the presidential administration and justice department – had ordered him to dismiss anyone who they considered as having worked on a legal probe against him. The complaint adds: “Patel explained that he had to dismiss the individuals his superiors told him to dismiss, because his capacity to hold his own role depended on the ouster of the officials who were involved in matters involving the chief executive. He explained that there was nothing he or the official could do to prevent these or any other firings, because ‘the agency tried to put the chief in detention and he recalls it clearly.’” After the official advised him he was disregarding the bureau's own policies, the director reportedly said “he knew that and he knew the essence of the swift terminations were likely unlawful”.

Widespread Impact

Since the director's claimed admission to the official, the justice department and the law enforcement agency have been dismantled and reorganized for his retribution system. Multiple of the FBI's top officials were terminated or compelled to leave in the early weeks of the presidency. Approximately 4,500 legal professionals at the department have accepted a “early exit scheme”. At least multiple DoJ lawyers, including those in the New York office, quit in protest over what they viewed as ideological pressure in withdrawing the legal action against the New York City mayor, Eric Adams, in exchange for his assistance with the administration's Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrests of immigrants. The ethics division of the department, which manages misconduct investigations, has been cut down to minimal staff. The equality section has been decimated: 70% of its staff has left. One-third of top officials at the department have quit. The division upholding environmental law has lost half its supervisors.

Incentives and Punishments

Regarding the legal matter, the interim prosecutor for the NY office, Danielle Sassoon, stepped down in protest against what she characterized as the “exchange”. A key figure, the president's “border czar,” appeared as the enforcer with him on television to declare: “Unless he complies, I'll reappear in NYC.”. And, another figure, earlier the justice department figure and a former Trump attorney, who brokered the arrangement, was granted an appellate federal judgeship, a likely stepping stone to the judicial branch.

His immunity for offenses carried out while in power, granted by the unprecedented decision of the Republican majority on the judicial body, thus preventing his legal action over the January 6 insurrection and preserving his electoral prospects for the national vote, is the cornerstone on which he stands to protect his supporters. Under these circumstances, he has been liberated to authorize misconduct. The impact of the court judgment saturates his presidency and the political party completely. The court matter has metastasized. Similar to the former president's legal adviser John Dean remarked about the Watergate
