The Legendary Anime Concludes a Quarter-Century Tradition in 2026

This marks the conclusion of an iconic period for ongoing anime, with the production studio revealing a revised release plan for the beloved series, which has been airing for more than 25 years and included dozens of filler arcs. Commencing in January, once the Egghead Island arc concludes, the animated series will go on a quarterly break until spring, when the Elbaph arc begins.

Updated Production Plan

Going forward, One Piece will produce two seasons every annually for a cap of 26 episodes. Toei explains this will help the anime to “dive even deeper into the core of the ONE PIECE world — including more content, rhythm, and timing of the source material.” Yet, Toei conclude by hinting at “thrilling developments” during the hiatus period, which means more related projects, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, set to premiere during this gap.

Learning from Past Breaks

The One Piece anime had a six-month break that began in October 2024 and concluded in April 2025. The intermission was for the production team to improve the animation quality and let the manga to build a lead to prevent a rushed adaptation and repetitive summaries. The show greatly benefited from this respite, and it has been able to supply fans with numerous fight scenes, superior graphics, and less filler than ever before.

Adopting Modern Trends

Although some recap episodes appeared during the recent run, the benefits of this new production schedule greatly outweigh the odd pause in the story. This additionally allows the original work, which is presently in the middle of the Elbaph arc, to extend its lead on the anime. According to the announcement, this may lead to a single installment of the anime covering one chapter, with others alternatively covering one and a half chapters or more to compensate for scheduling.

It's the end of an era for anime, as the epic saga is the last big series to abandon the traditional method of creation, which prioritized airing for almost the entire year. This explains why iconic series such as Bleach, and naturally One Piece have so many side stories, and the standard of the animation can change drastically between installments and the following. Nowadays, anime production is organized in cours, with a couple maximum releasing each annually, allowing for better quality and greater accuracy to the source material.
